A Wealth of Courses in Wales

If you look in any UK golf directory, you will find that Wales, though small, has many excellent UK golf courses. An England Scotland Wales vacation is an excellent way to enjoy some of Europe's most rustic, unspoiled golf clubs.

Wales As A Vacation Destination

Many people travel to the UK for an England Scotland Wales vacation. What is so popular about Wales? It is the smallest country in the UK, so what does it have that draws so many visitors each year?

Wales is primarily a rural country, and as such has a beautiful, unspoiled landscape. Visitors enjoy seeing sheep dotting the beautiful green hillsides. Hiking, climbing, horseback riding and fishing are all popular activities. And of course, the Welsh golf courses draw hundreds of visitors each year.

Popular Welsh Golf Clubs

Perhaps what draws so many people to the Welsh golf clubs is the historic and scenic appeal each course offers. Some of the courses were developed in the late 1800s. The landscape is ideal for golf courses. If you look at a UK golf directory, you will see many top-rated courses in Wales including:

Llandrindod Wells Golf Club

The Llandrindod Wells Golf Club was founded in 1905 and was designed by Harry Vardon. It has par 69, and i s just about 5,800 yards long. The course was designed to use the natural contours of the landscape, and as such offers stunning views. It is a challenging course, with many natural hazards. Placing the ball correctly at the tee is the most important part of playing this course. In the summer, the course costs £22 for a round, and £31 pounds. On the weekend it is £28 for a round and £35 for a day. In the winter, the price goes down substantially, at £15 for a round and £20 for a day during the week. It is £5 more on the weekend.

There are several historic places to stay around Llandrindod Wells Golf Club, including the charming Neuadd Farm. Also nearby is the Hotel Metropole. The Three Wells Farm Guest House offers guests the chance to stay on the side of a swan filled pond. Each of these accommodations offers historic value to their guests. Area attractions are hiking, biking, and horseback riding through the beautiful countryside. Llandrindod is also a popular spa town.

Roman Road Course

T he Roman Road Course is part of the Celtic Manor Resort. Built along a road that overlooks an ancient Roman village, the course is quite challenging. It has long holes with many blind tees. There is significant elevation on the course. It is a par-70 course, and costs £60 in the summer.

Most visitors to the Roman Road Course stay in the luxurious Celtic Manor Resort, of which the course is a part. Here the staff pampers their guests with every luxury and excellent food and spa services. The Resort is part of 1,400 acres of beautiful Welsh parkland. Many people come to the Manor to enjoy the relaxing spa therapies. There is a club for children that boasts a movie theater, ball pit, and personal video games. There are also clay pigeon shooting facilities and fishing lakes at the Resort.

Coldra Woods

Coldra Woods is also located at Celtic Manor. This is one of the best short courses in England. It is a par three course. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the course, like the Roman Roads Course , uses the natural contours of the land to create hazards and difficulties. For a short course, it is quite challenging. Visitors to Coldra Woods enjoy exploring the history of the Roman town nearby, as well as the facilities of the Manor.

Wentwood Hills Course

Robert Trent Jones Jr. built the par 72 Wentwood Hills Course. Also part of the Celtic Manor Resort, this relatively new course is championship quality. Wentwood has some features that resemble American courses, specifically those from Florida. It is quite large at 7,403 yards. The second hole is the best of the course, and it is a par five, with an excellent view. There are several sand bunkers throughout the course. The cost for the course is £60 in the summer.

Celtic Manor offers golf classes for all ages. For groups of two, the price is £60 per hour. The price for larger groups is reduced, when viewed as a per person price. All equipment is available for rent at the Celtic Manor Resort.

Aberdovey Golf Course

Aberdovey Golf Course is located on Cardigan Bay, and is a wildly beautiful location tucked between the hills and the sea. It is a historic course, and dates back to the late 1800s. While playing Aberdovey, you can hear the sea roaring behind the course. Because it is by the water, there are sometimes wind effects with which to deal. The course costs £38 on weekdays and £42 on the weekend. It is a moderately challenging links course, and the hazards are often hidden. It is 6,645 yards long.

There are two hotels near by offering accommodations for golfers, and those who stay locally can receive a discount on their green fees. The Dormy Bungalow overlooks the course, and is ideal for large parties. There is only one bungalow, though, so book well in advance. Another hotel that overlooks the greens is the Trefeddian Hotel. It has friendly service. The clubhouse at the course is comfortable, offering a bar, lounge, and dining area, as well as a TV room.
