Find Championship Golf a Stone's Throw from New York City

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area offers native New Yorkers the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and to find repose amid the beauty of nature. Among the Poconos resorts, the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort stands out as one of the great Poconos getaways.

Why the Poconos?

The Poconos are only a stone's throw from New York City, yet it feels like a world away. The Delaware Water Gap Area is filled with historic lodges and hotels for guests to retreat from the hectic city life. Many of the resorts have Poconos spa facilities. The area around Poconos is mountainous and full of beautiful forests. No matter what the season, weary New Yorkers can find relaxation. In the winter, snowboarding and tubing are popular. The summer brings water parks, fishing, and boating. In the fall, the area comes alive with the colors of the changing seasons. It is no wonder that people come from all across the state to the Pocono hotels for their vacation each year.

Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort

Set in these beautiful mountains is the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, a long time favorite for a Poconos vacation. The resort offers excellent golf experiences, as well as many things for non-golfers to enjoy.

Location

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is only seventy-five miles from New York City, making it a prime getaway destination. Not only can you find great golf there, but you can also ski and explore the mountains. The resort is located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which offers a beautiful backdrop for the golf courses.

Course

The course at Shawnee was the first course A.W. Tillinghast designed. It was completed in 1907, and has stood the test of time. Its history is rich. In 1938 it was home to the PGA Championships, and in 1967, the NCAA Championships were hosted there. The course is a twenty-seven hole course, and twenty-four of those holes are on a private island.

The course is broken down into three nine hole courses, the Worthington, the Warring, and the Tillinghast. Each one is a par 36. As it has been the host to several championships, the course is not easy, but it is beautiful! For new golfers, the resort offers PGA classes at their Golf Academy.

The green fees for the Shawnee Course are $50 during the week and $70 on the weekend. The fee includes the cart and eighteen holes of golf. There are special twilight rates of $30 during the week and $50 on the weekend.
