Hard to Believe? Golf is Japan's Favorite Sport

If you are planning an Asian golf tour, be sure to plan to spend several days in Japan. The Japan golf market is booming, and surprisingly, it is a popular national activity. Asian golfers are buying up Japanese golf accessories and heading out to the greens. You don't want to miss out!

Golf in Japan

Golf in Japan is surprisingly popular. The country is home to more that 2,340 courses. In spite of this high number, green fees are expensive given the premium placed on spaces on these crowded islands. Many courses do, however, offer driving ranges and facilities for practice.

Japan is world famous for its stunning gardens, and the art of landscaping is evident on the nation's golf courses, which are also well designed. They offer Asian golfers challenging play; many a Japan golf tour rivals the toughest competition in the United States.

Japan Courses

While there are more than 2,000 Japanese golf clubs, some stand out above the rest. Some of the more popular courses include:

Caledonian Golf Course

The Caledonian golf course is an eighteen hole par 72 course. The course is challenging, with fast greens that contain plenty of hills and valleys. There are many different hole layouts, which keep visitors consistently engaged. Located in Chiba, the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo hotel is perhaps the best location to stay while enjoying the Caledonian course.

Phoenix Country Club

The Phoenix Country Club, which is located in Miyazaki, is rated among the world's top one hundred courses. It is also among the top three of any Asian golf tour. The Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort is only a five-minute shuttle bus ride to the Club House. The shuttle is free. The Phoenix Seagaia Resort on the Pacific coastline is home to the Phoenix Country Club and provides excellent accommodations. The course is a 27 hole par 108 course that comes highly recommended.

Nikko Golf Park Harel

The Nikko Golf Park Harel is one of Japan's more reasonably priced courses, and offers excellent views of the area. Golf carts are armed with GPS monitors, which makes distancing easy. The course is fairly challenging, and is an eighteen hole par-72. The Nikko Park Lodge is a great place to stay when playing this course.

Windsor Park Golf & Country Club

Windsor Park Golf & Country Club is located in Ibaraki. This eighteen hole par 72 course is moderately challenging, but beautiful. A two-hour train ride from Tokyo, the course is well worth it. The staff speaks good English. Windsor Park has its own hotel that offers excellent accommodations with beautiful views of the course.

Koumi RE-EX Country Club

Located in Nagano, Koumi RE-EX Country Club is a high altitude course, which is perfect for hot summer play. This resort course is challenging, and is an eighteen hole par 72. Finland Village is a good choice for accommodations while playing this course. Also, the Resort itself offers their guests luxurious amenities. The availability of English speakers is not high at this course.
